In Appalachia

Appalachia Volunteers of Boston College

It's a beloved BC tradition, a profound formative experience, and a faith journey that lasts all year long, culminating in a spring break service trip where a student might do anything from building a house to planting a garden to feeding a child. It is the University’s largest service immersion program, familiarly known as Appa, and this year, its more than 500 students served in 36 sites across the Appalachian region and beyond.

  • Watch a video highlighting some of this year’s Appa volunteers.
  • Read a blog post from the Third Street Education Center in Greenville, N.C., describing the impact one BC student had on a child he got to know during his service there.
  • Visit Appalachia Volunteers on Facebook for photos and stories of Appa adventures.
