Why Each Gift Matters

A key priority of Boston College’s Light the World campaign is its commitment to life-changing financial aid, including current-use support, endowed scholarships, and graduate fellowships. Here, three Eagles share how BC’s generous student aid creates transformative experiences at the Heights.

WHAT IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED AT BC?

My professors are constantly emphasizing the importance of combining theory with practice. They can teach you the concepts, but at the end of the day, you have to be the one to put these lessons into action. Thanks to my scholarship, I am focusing on global issues like environmental law, climate change, and water conservation. I’m trying to learn as much as I can at BC so I can make a difference in the world.

HOW HAVE TODAY’S DONORS HELPED YOU APPRECIATE BC’S JESUIT VALUES?

Receiving a named scholarship gave me a more personal understanding of the gift I’ve been given. I feel a responsibility to apply my talents in a positive way, and it’s even influenced my research topics. I hope to combine my interests in physics and math in a way that matters, in this case, in the field of genetics. I’ve learned there are many paths to living the Jesuit motto, “men and women for others.”

DID YOUR FELLOWSHIP IMPACT YOUR GRADUATE SCHOOL CHOICE?

For me, being able to attend BC’s Lynch School of Education was entirely dependent on financial aid. This fellowship has allowed me to join a community where I can develop and grow, not only as a scholar, but as a person. Now I hope to use what I’ve learned here to help other first-generation college students like me pursue their dreams.
