Webmaster's Corner

Welcome to BC Web Publishing

Anyone at Boston College can contribute to the web environment. Sections of the web site are reserved for all BC departments, schools, institutes and student organizations.

Just fill out the InfoProvider form and return it to the webmaster for your account to be processed. Your account will stay active until you leave Boston College at which time your email and web accounts will all be removed.

You can have multiple people contributing to the same section of the website. But each contributor needs to fill out the provider form. NO ONE else may use your account once it has been established. To give out your username and pin is to violate BC security practices.

Once your account has been set up, you will be notified of the url and directory path of the pages you have access to on the site. You can use FTP to copy any html files, scripts or graphics to your section of the website. The name given to the main page of each directory of your site should be default.html.

BC supports the use of Dreamweaver as the our html tool standard. It is available for purchase for a heavily discounted price at the Tech store.

Because the BC Website is so large and contains long urls, you may request an alias to your website. An alias takes the form:

    http://www.bc.edu/name
where name is the name you would like assigned to your website.

You may also choose to password protect sections of your website. To request that a password be placed on your website, send the url, username and password you've chosen to the BC webmaster and the password will be applied to the requested pages. Passwords may be applied to the main BC web server. In restricting sites on the Personal Web Server, .htaccess may be utilized. For futher directions, check out directions for .htaccess.

You may also request a group email account that several people have access to.

As you create files for your new website, be sure to follow the instructions on the use of metatags. Metatags allow the search engine to index files and help us find the owners of pages that need repair.

You may also wish to have a search of your area of the website. Just follow the directions for implementing search.

Once your site is ready for the public, send a messsage with your organization's home page URL to infoeagle@bc.edu and we will add a link to your site to the indexes on the www.bc.edu server and the What's New page.
