Development Tools
Boston College recommends a specific set of development tools to help you create html pages. This is for three very good reasons:
- These tools are suppported by the University IT staff and store
- They work on both MAC and PC but do not require a specific server or browser to view
- Any University wide templates available in the future will be created with these tools
Macromedia's Dreamweaver is the recommended tool for developing html pages and javascript. It is a very advanced html editor which allows you to type in html code directly or use
the many menu options to generate the code. Dreamweaver works on either the MAC or PC and is available at the BC Techstore.
Macromedia also makes a graphics software package called Fireworks. It can come bundled with Dreamweaver. It allows you to manipulate graphics and store them in the best format for the web.
Macromedia's more sophisticated tool is called FLASH. Flash movies can be created to make a site more interactive. It allows you to build sites with animation, sounds and menu choices.
To create databases at Boston College, most staff members use FileMaker Pro. Filemaker databases can be easily web enabled and we have a hosting environment for them at Boston College. For more information on hosting your web enabled database, please contact the BC webmaster.
