Hosting FileMaker Pro Databases
FileMaker Pro is the standard software tool for making small database applications at Boston College. Filemaker runs on both the MAC and the PC and is available for sale at the Tech Products store.
FileMaker has some built in utilities to allow you to publish databases on the web. At the moment we are hosting about 20 databases on a BC web server. The databases are sponsored by departments and schools such as Human Resources, the Career Center and CSOM.
They are several benefits of hosting FileMaker Pro databases in this environment:
- The database is hosted on a central server that you have access to.
- It is part of the BC web environment and therefore is monitored to stay open.
- The database is available from both inside the BC network and outside.
- Web applications are by definition, insecure, they're open to the public. So it is always best to isolate web applications for security reasons.
We are currently looking for additional hardware to host more databases at BC. Our currrent server is at the limit Claris recommends for hosting databases in a single environment. When new equipment becomes available, we will again be able to accept more databases for hosting.
