Food is one of the most important nourishments for our growing bodies. It energizes our bodies with nutrients that keep them strong and healthy. Food and eating are also a delightful source of pleasure, whether a crisp apple or homemade swirl brownie – food is a joy.

Yet many people find food to be a source of daily struggle. For these people, the act of eating – or not eating – is not just an issue of body nourishment and hunger. Instead, it is serious and harmful way that misguided young people cope with emotional, physical, psychological, social stress. It is also a fixation that can take total control over a person’s behavior. When food can affect one’s self-esteem, sense of identity, or ability to be happy – it is not just a simple problem anymore, but a serious eating disorder.

Eating disorders are very severe health issues, not just in the United States, but almost everywhere around the world. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, there are as many as ten million people or more suffering from eating disorders, and the number seems to be on the rise in pop cultures and societies today.
