What causes depression?
Depression can be triggered by:
- Previous traumatic experiences: As children it is hard to understand and interpret disturbing experiences, like neglect or abuse. However, as we mature into the teenage years, flashbacks to these painful memories can result in great despair, sadness and loneliness.
- Troubling and significant events: Major changes and traumatic experiences during the teenage years can result in depression. Some examples of these events include: the death of a loved one, parents’ divorce, family financial problems, and moving to a new town.
- Stress: With the pressure in school, social groups and sports teams, adolescence is a very stressful time period. Without the support from a positive and helpful influence it is very easy for adolescents to feel alone and overwhelmed.
- Hormonal changes: During puberty, the teenage body is constantly changing both physically and emotionally with the production of hormones. As a result, mood and behavior will change as well.
- Genetics: Depression is heredity so some teens may be naturally prone to depression due to their biological makeup.
- A mixture of all the above!
