Breathing with Both Lungs: Growth and Challenge in Orthodox-Catholic Relations since Vatican II
December 10, 2009
Presenter: Brian Daley, S.J., Catherine F. Huisking Professor of Theology, University of Notre Dame
In its Decree on Ecumenism, the Second Vatican Council identified the restoration of Christian unity as a primary concern, emphasizing the special ties of sacraments, theology, and spirituality that hold the Catholic and Orthodox Churches in unique closeness. This lecture reflects on the progress of this ecumenical dialogue in the U.S. since its official beginning in 1965. This dialogue is a sobering yet hopeful commentary on a practical aspect of preaching and living the Gospel, acknowledging divisions, as well as the possibility of moving beyond them.
