Pope Francis's Interview:
Continuing the Conversation

featuring video with John Allen, Jr., Rev. Michael Himes, and others

Explore the themes and contexts of Pope Francis's papacy from his early interviews to his most recent presentations in the United States.  First, examine the phenomenon of the papal press conference on the plane, which grew from the initial impromptu, hour-long interview to an anticipated feature during each major leg of an apostolic trip.  We will compare the earliest press conference with one of his most recent. Then look at the transition from a formal interview to a more formal apostolic exhortation.  In the final week, reflect on the issues that occupy the attention of Francis's third year in the papacy. We will identify the most frequently mentioned topics by examining the July 2015 address in Bolivia and a presentation he made on his 2015 trip to the U.S.  These themes closely parallel topics that emerge in Laudato Si'.
