Director of Christian Service

The Director of Christian Service of Loyola School is a member of the Campus Ministry Department, which is chaired by the Director of Campus Ministry. The Director of Christian Service reports to the Director of Campus Ministry, and ultimately, to the Principal. The Director of Christian Service collaborates with the Director of Campus Ministry in promoting the school’s Ignatian identity, particularly in the articulation of the service of faith and promotion of justice. The Service Director implements both the required and optional components of the school’s four year, required Christian Service program. Specifically, the Christian Service Director is responsible for the following, in consultation with the Director of Campus Ministry:

Active Service Component

         ·  Mentors students in their selection of service placements; facilitates student placement at local non-profit agencies

         ·  Monitors student progress towards meeting their service requirements

         ·  Serves as the liaison with site supervisors at local service placements

         ·  Maintains and updates the data base of local service placements

         ·  Maintains records documenting student progress in meeting their service requirements

         ·  Maintains relationships with placement volunteer coordinators, evaluates service 
placements annually, explores potential new service placement partnerships 
Class-time Component

         ·  Facilitates the Christian Service classroom component of the program

         ·  Structures class opportunities for shared reflection on service experiences of students; 
designs reflection papers to help students integrate Christian Service class content and 
school-wide justice initiatives with their active service experiences

         ·  Designs scope and sequence for Christian Service class sessions; maintains thematic 
connections between the retreat and the Christian Service experiences at each grade 

         ·  Updates Christian Service curriculum on an annual basis

         ·  Integrates Ignatian themes throughout the Christian Service program 
Optional Trips

· Organizes optional Christian Service trips and programs (including trips to Camden, NJ; Appalachia; YSOP; Belize; Solidarity Sleep-Out); identifies partner organizations, organizes travel details; prepares adult and student participants for trip expectations, facilitates reflection during trips; manages the budget and financial aid considerations for each trip; drives and/or secures drivers for 12-passenger vans for most service trips

         ·  Encourages and recruits student participation and faculty chaperone participants for service trips

         ·  Upon completion of each trip, solicits feedback from all participants

         ·  Evaluates current service trip offerings and explores opportunities to expand the service 
trip offerings 
School Culture

         ·  Actively participates in the student retreat program

         ·  Is present to students in the Commons, and provides pastoral counseling to students as 
needed; makes appropriate referrals to the Guidance department and administration

         ·  Collaborates with the Dean of Students in response to student transgressions of a 
serious nature (plagiarism, misrepresentation of hours, misconduct at service sites, deliberately disruptive trip behavior, etc.); collaborates with the Dean of Academics to coordinate student accountability 

         ·  Maintains an active and discerning faith life and a personal commitment to social justice

         ·  Meets regularly with the Director of Campus Ministry to discuss the Christian Service 
program and other departmental initiatives

         ·  Organizes or assists with the organization of special events concerned with the faith and 
justice life of the school

         ·  Develops and maintains the program’s budget and advocates for program funding

         ·  Maintains and updates the Christian Service Handbook, Christian Service course Moodle 
pages, and Christian Service website

         ·  Represents the school as needed at Province, JSEA, and Diocesan meetings for Service 

         ·  Teaches classes as assigned by the Principal

         ·  Serves as a member of the Large Group Student Life Committee

         ·  In consultation with the Principal and Director of Campus Ministry, sets the Christian 
Service calendar for the year

         ·  Attends all grade-level meetings

         ·  Attends meetings of the Theology Department
