BC Nursing: Making the Difference

"Caring for people is something I like. Having the ability to go into a hospital, or in any health care setting ... seeing somebody and being able to assess them, diagnose them, plan something that's going to bring a good outcome for them ... so they can live a better life. And that's what I've learned at BC. That in itself is an amazing thing.

"You know - you can make such a difference. Not only with the physical aspect of it, but if you go in with this attitude that you're going to help them, you're interested in them, and you're there to care for them, anytime someone is in the hospital, you make the difference. And the nurse is really the one who makes the difference; it's not the doctor, it's the nurse. Just having the ability to make that difference is what really gets you into nursing and keeps you there and makes you want more. It's almost like an addiction. It's like a high.

"And the School of Nursing at BC - the professors, the staff - is excellent. The clinical placements we have in the hospitals - they are all excellent hospitals. The connections the faculty have are amazing - they can hook you up anywhere. Just coming from BC, with the connections, is an amazing boosting factor. Whether you're a student getting an intership for the summer or after graduation ... they say, "Oh, you're from BC?" and right away they're interested. There's no problem getting a job. At this point they see us ready to do the assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating. We're ready to do that on our own."
