There are three courses that make up the teaching certificate. All courses are offered online or on a distance-basis. Although the opportunity to come to campus may be offered, it is not necessary to complete the teaching certificate.
NU 580 Foundations in Teaching and Learning in Nursing
- 3 graduate credits
Course Description: Foundations in Teaching and Learning in Nursing focuses on introducing teaching and learning constructs and concepts in the context of nursing education. This includes philosophy of education, principles of teaching and learning, history of nursing education, learning styles, curriculum development and design, and teaching critical thinking. The role of nurse educators will be explored.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, the student will:
- Develop a philosophy of education that is consistent with his/her values and beliefs about teaching and learning
- Apply the principles of teaching and learning both in the classroom and in clinical settings.
- Use culturally sensitive approaches to address curriculum development and student learning experiences.
- Evaluate learners from diverse backgrounds, using learning style assessment tools.
- Discuss various evaluation methods for clinical and classroom teaching.
- Analyze a variety of legal and ethical issues that relate to the student/teacher role.
- Use evidence-based teaching principles in the development of a teaching/learning project.
NU 582 Designing Learning in Nursing Education
- 3 graduate credits
Course Description: This course applies knowledge of teaching and learning principles to content development and delivery for classroom, computer/web-based and clinical learning design. Also included are issues and methods for evaluation of learning. Mentoring/advising to promote student retention and progression is addressed.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, the student will:
- Apply philosophy of education, principles and theories of education to develop a classroom/clinical learning module.
- Design module (i.e. classroom and/or other learning unit) to
meet learning needs of a designated group of learners including:
a. formulation of objectives
b. selection of teaching strategies to meet objectives
c. evaluation of student attainments of objectives
d. critique of effectiveness module - Incorporate legal and ethical principles into teaching and approach.
- Explore mentoring/advising components of the nurse educator role.
- Use evidence-based knowledge in selecting teaching-learning experiences.
- Use culturally sensitive approaches in the selection of content and strategies.
NU 583 Teaching Practicum
- Prerequisite: NU 580 and NU 582
- 3 graduate credits
Course Description: The role of the nurse educator is actualized through the practicum experiences that integrate knowledge from previous courses. Opportunities for precepted learning experiences in the classroom and clinical setting are available for each participant. Classroom teaching includes the development of teaching objectives and strategies, test construction and evaluation of didactic learning. The clinical practicum focuses on developing clinical assignments, testing and evaluating clinical performance, laboratory skill development and competency testing as well as mentoring and working with clinical staff and preceptors across clinical settings with diverse populations.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, the student will:
- Link philosophy of education with planning and development of course presentation.
- Apply principles to teaching and learning curriculum development, instruction, and evaluation in the classroom, clinical, and laboratory settings.
- Use scholarly evidence from a variety of sources in the preparation of course curricula and the development of instructional technology.
- Implement the role of nurse educator in precepted teaching/learning experiences in a variety of settings with diverse populations.
- Analyze teaching experience and critique overall performance according to established evaluation criteria.
