Financial-Aid

master's and post-master's programs

This page is intended to provide prospective and enrolled master's students with information about resources that assist in finding financial aid, scholarships, grants, and other funding for their studies. Every attempt has been made to provide accurate information. However, deadlines and other requirements may change so it is recommended that students contact the source of assistance directly.

Several types of financial assistance are available for graduate students. The university financial aid office can facilitate a variety of types of student loans. For more information, contact Student Services at 617-552-3320.

INTERNAL RESOURCES

  • Tuition remission credit: Tuition remission is awarded on a competitive basis at the time of admission for the following academic year. The value of the tuition credits awarded is credited to the student's account. A limited amount of additional tuition remission may be available for continuing students.
  • Federal Traineeship: Federal traineeship monies are usually available each year to full time graduate students or to students enrolled in their clinical practica (Full-time study requires a minimum of 9 credits per semester). Students must be a US citizen or a resident alien. Students in the Master's Entry Option are eligible after successful completion of the first year of study. Awards are usually announced by the federal government in the late spring. The Graduate Office announces the availability of applications and the deadline as soon as possible thereafter.
  • Teaching Assistantships: Graduate students are eligible to be considered for a teaching assistantship in the School of Nursing. This assistantship provides a stipend. Teaching Assistants may teach an undergraduate or graduate course, assist faculty members in their teaching roles, assist with other responsibilities related to teaching and/or evaluation of students and programs.
  • Research Assistantships: Research assistantships may become available depending on faculty grants. Students interested in being considered for such opportunities should monitor bulletin boards and e-mail notices regarding research options.

Boston College and Genesis HealthCare Nurse Scholars Program (Genesis Scholarship)

Application deadline March 15, 2008

Genesis HealthCare (GHC) has established a loan forgiveness program at Boston College that provides financial assistance to graduate students at the Connell School of Nursing who have expressed an interest in geriatric nursing and/or palliative care.  Students who are named Genesis Nurse Scholars will receive up to $25,000 in forgivable loans, made on a year-to-year basis, in exchange for a commitment to work full time at a GHC facility following graduation.  GHC will forgive one year, or up to $25,000, of tuition for every two years of full-time employment with Genesis.

The GHC Nurse Scholars Program will be available to graduate students in the Connell School of Nursing at Boston College who are enrolled in either the traditional Masters Degree track, or the accelerated Masters Entry track (please see attached descriptions).  Full tuition amounts are reflected in the chart below.  Students will be responsible for covering any additional tuition expenses, if any, and can apply for additional aid from Boston College through the normal channels.

The current cost per credit is $970.  In future years, this cost will be updated to reflect any tuition changes.  Boston College will notify GHC of any change in fees by July 15 of the year preceding the academic year of the loan.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for the Genesis Nurse Scholars Program (NSP), candidates must:

  • Be full-time students enrolled at Boston College’s Connell School of Nursing
  • Have a specialty focus in gerontologeal or palliative care nursing
  • Make a two-year full-time employment commitment to Genesis HealthCare for each year of tuition covered by the Nurse Scholar Program.

Application Process

Through a competitive application process, Boston College will select up to three candidates for the GHC loan.  The selection committee will be comprised of the Dean of the Connell School, the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the Connell School, and a faculty member specializing in geriatric nursing.  Once three finalists are selected, Boston College will forward the students’ transcripts, resumes and letters of recommendation to GHC.  Boston College will indicate each candidate’s degree track and the anticipated cost per year of the student’s course load. Selection Process

Members of the Genesis HealthCare Nurse Scholars Program Board will review applications, conduct personal interviews, and select finalists.  Finalists will be asked to submit to a background check and drug screening, in keeping with the company’s normal hiring process.  Those candidates whose applications are not recommended for approval will be encouraged to submit an application the following year.

Responsibility of Students

Selected students who agree to become Genesis Nurse Scholars will sign a loan forgiveness agreement with GHC.  Students accepted into the NSP will agree to:

  • Satisfactorily complete the degree track approved for NSP funding with a 3.0 average or better;
  • Begin full-time employment at a Genesis HealthCare nursing center within 60 days of graduation;
  • Meet GHC pre-employment requirements such as background checks, drug screening, and others per GHC policy.
  • Maintain a performance appraisal rating of at least “effective” as defined by GHC policy;
  • Work a sufficient number of hours in order to maintain full-time status (32 hours per week);
  • Gain professional licensure certification within six months following graduation; and
  • Comply with other requirements of GHC’s NSP as may be in effect at the time funds are disbursed.

Award Process

GHC will transfer funds up to $25,000 toward the selected student’s tuition to Boston College.  Funds will be transferred on or before August 15 for the student’s upcoming academic year.

Haley Scholarship

Application deadline March 15, 2008

The Haley Family - Kathleen Powers Haley and her husband Steven Russell Haley have endowed a scholarship for Brigham and Women nurses to attend Boston College School of Nursing for preparation in advanced practice nursing.

The scholarship is for 6 credits per academic year and may continue for a total of 3 academic years if the student successfully completes at least 9 credits per year.

Preference is to be given to nurses employed by Brigham and Women’s Hospital or one of its affiliates (Faulkner, Children’s or Dana Farber). Eligibility is also contingent on practice and anticipated study related to neuroscience nursing (which is broadly defined as caring for patients with actual or potential neurological problems).

Students in either the MS or PhD nursing programs may apply. In addition, RN’s with a baccalaureate degree in another field are eligible for the scholarship if they apply to the RN/MS program. Both new students (non-matriculated into BC who are exploring graduate nursing education and are taking courses as a non-matriculated student at BC may apply) and students already in the graduate program are eligible.

Non-matriculated students who are interested in applying as a special student should (1) complete a special student application; (2) forward this with an official transcript of your BSN to the graduate office; and (3) attach an essay on how attending BC and obtaining advanced practice education will enhance practice in neuroscience nursing. Non-matriculated students who are applying for regular admission should complete the full application process and add the essay described above. Matriculated students should forward the essay described above to the graduate office.

The essay should include: (1) a brief personal and professional introduction; (2) how your current practice relates to actual or potential neuroscience nursing problems; (3) your reasons for choosing a field related to neuroscience nursing practice; (4) your professional goals (related to neuroscience nursing), how you plan to implement those goals, and how the BC experience will facilitate those goals.

Additional information about this scholarship is available from the graduate office. Contact the Graduate Office (617-552-4928 or csongrad@bc.edu).
