As a community heath nurse, my practice, teaching and research are engaged in the real world of people. A person’s health isn’t something I can prescribe to them. Rather, it’s something people themselves own; I work with them to achieve what they want to be.
Community health nursing is filled with complexity that’s beyond the controlled environment of health institutions. Most people don’t spend the majority of their time in hospitals. They are in their homes and workplaces—in their communities.
Community health challenges us to take on the very real issues of literacy, poverty, and racial disparities. I’m committed to looking at nursing from the perspective of social justice and to understanding how economic and social conditions impact health.
