Frequently Asked Questions
bc test prep
WHO TEACHES THESE COURSES?
Generally our instructors are professional educators. They are teachers, lawyers, and a few are doctoral students. All are experienced in education and in teaching these courses and have scored in the top percentiles on their exams.
WHY IS BOSTON COLLEGE'S TUITION SO MUCH LESS THAN OTHER COMPANIES?
Our tuition is lower because we are a non-profit University. We have many resources provided to us which the private companies must pay for ... classrooms, a bursar to handle billing, registrars, and administrative staff. Boston College's "profit" is education.
Private test preparation companies must invest huge sums in advertising, which must be paid for through tuition charges. We have a marketing asset that has paid for itself many times over and which requires no further investment, i.e. the Boston College name. Our focus is quality.
SHOULD I TAKE THE REGULAR FORMAT OR THE INTENSIVE?
That's an individual decision. Some people prefer the weekend course because it takes less of their time or they must travel a great distance to attend classes.
The regular format gives the advantage of time between class sessions for practice/ review of material and the opportunity to discuss practice problems with the instructor at the next class.
The regular format also has a diagnostic test at the beginning, and a practice test at the end, (both usually from a previously administered actual exam). The weekend format does not, as time won't permit.
DO THESE COURSES REALLY HELP?
The exams are difficult and you should not attempt to take one without thorough preparation.
By taking a course you will be familiar with the exam format, directions, content, and test-taking strategies.
A course will help you raise your score ... but you must practice the strategies and techniques covered in the classroom by working through the practice exercises contained in our books.
WHAT BOOKS DO YOU USE?
This year Boston College uses the study materials developed and published by Cambridge Educational Services. Dr. Thomas Martinson, who writes the material, has developed materials for three nationally known test preparation courses and has authored over 35 tests preparation books. Any changes in test format are immediately incorporated into our materials. In addition, we use the official guides published by the testing agencies containing actual test questions.
