Doctoral student wins scholarship

The Nurse Educational Funds, Inc. (NEF) chose doctoral student Katie Phillips as one of 9 2012-2013 Doctoral Scholarship winner.

According to its website, NEF “is a not-for-profit organization which seeks and distributes funds to baccalaureate prepared registered nurses who are in need of nursing scholarship assistance for graduate study. NEF is administered by a Board of Directors comprised of prominent leaders in nursing, business, and other professions. Nurses comprise the majority of board members.”

Kathryn Phillips

Kathryn Phillips, the Lucy Perry scholarship winner, originally started her career in the business field after obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After working a while in the business sector she took a position in long term care and discovered she enjoyed working with patients and families. While caring for older adults she completed a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Lesley University. She then decided, with mentorship from a veteran nurse, she wanted to take on the unique role nurses had with patients and finished her Master’s in Nursing at Boston College. Today Kathryn Is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the Adult Health specialty working per diem as a Nurse Practitioner on the Internal Medicine service at McLean Hospital while working towards her Doctoral degree at Boston College. Her research will focus on neurotrophin, Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), and its relationship to serotonin in anorexic patients
