  • Where does the trip go? How do participants get there? Trip participants will be flying from Logan airport in Boston to San Salvador, El Salvador.

  • When does the trip take place? This trip takes place during the summer.

  • Who is eligible to go? In addition to the undergraduate and graduate students of Boston College who will participate in this trip, there will also be a staff advisor and one student leader. John Cawthorne of the Lynch School of Education will oversee the group as an advisor and a student will be chosen as the undergraduate leader.

  • What do participants do there? While in El Salvador, students learn about the economic and political reality there; more specifically, the challenges facing Salvadoran youth. The trip also provides opportunities for the experiences, insights, struggles, needs, and hopes of the Salvadoran people to be heard and recognized--to "give voice to the voiceless." Ay taking this trip to El Salvador, participants are given an opportunity to have an intensive educational experience. While in El Salvador, participants will learn about the economic and political reality there; more specifically, the challenges facing Salvadoran youth. Participants will also be provided with opportunities for the experiences, insights, struggles, needs, and hopes of the Salvadoran people to be heard and recognized; to “give voice to the voiceless.” Another objective of the trip is to provide a special understanding of the violence facing El Salvador today and the role of solidarity in peacemaking. The group also aims to facilitate contact that will encourage commitment to serving the poor.

  • What about meals and sleeping arrangements? Program fees cover all in-country expenses including ground transportation, itinerary planning, interpretation, food, and lodging. Students will be sleeping in guest houses, which can lodge up to six people.

  • Do participants need to be fluent in Spanish to participate in this trip? No. Although participants do not need to be fluent, some Spanish skills would be helpful, but not necessary. Participants will be selected from a range of Spanish-speaking abilities.

  • How many students will be picked for this trip? In addition to a staff advisor and student leader, between 10 and 12 students will be selected.
