David Scanlon has been nominated and accepted as a Fellow of the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities (IARLD). IARLD is an elected group of premier scientists, educators and clinicians in the field of learning disabilities throughout the world. Academy Fellows are nominated by members of the Academy and recommended to the appropriate membership committee. Membership in this class is open to representatives of all professional disciplines related to the field of learning disabilities. In order to aid in stimulating ideas and research possibilities, no one discipline or country is represented by more than 49% of the total number of Academy Fellows. IARLD Fellows are those who are the world's leaders in the scientific study of human problems related to leraning disabilities. A maximum of 300 Fellows is allowed in the Academy.

Philip Altbach has been named associate editor of the American Educational Research Journal, a quarterly journal published by The American Educational Research Association (AERA). AERA is the most prominent international organization for education professionals, whose main purpose is to advance educational research and its practical application. This journal is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious research journals in the education field. Dr. Altbach has also been named chair of the International Advisory Committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Graduate School of Education, one of the top 8 universities in China. His co-edited book, World Class Worldwide: Research Universities in Asia and Latin America  (Johns Hopkins University Press), has recently been translated into Chinese, Spanish, Korean, and Japanese.  Dr.  Altbach has also been appointed to the planning committee for the UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education, to be held in July 2009.

Dr. Janet E. Helms, August Long Professor, has been selected for two prestigious awards. Dr. Helms won the 2008 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy from the American Psychological Association (APA), the largest association of psychologists worldwide. She has also been selected to receive the Distinguished Elder Award given by the National Multicultural Conference and Summit. This award honors individuals for their outstanding lifelong contributions to the advancement of multicultural psychology. It recognizes courageous pioneers who challenged existing paradigms within psychology and who blazed a path for multi-cultural researchers and practitioners. She will be recognized at the 2009 National Multicultural Conference and Summit, to be held in New Orleans next January.  Fellow Lynch School professor Dr. Anderson Franklin, will also be receiving the Elder Award. . Dr. Helms is currently serving as the President-elect for Division 17 of the APA for 2007-2008 and will begin her term as President in August 2008. Division 17 APA, the Society of Counseling Psychology, promotes personal, educational, vocational, and group adjustment in a variety of settings, supports its members, and celebrates their diversity.
