Poetry Contest Rules
MASSACHUSETTS SCIENCE POETRY CONTEST
  1. All students, including those in special education, in grades K-8 are invited to participate through their school.
  2. Entries must be original poems about science principals, ideas or activities. Poems must be written in class (illustrations may be done at home). No copied poems.
  3. Entries must be submitted on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper.
  4. Each entry must reflect accurate science knowledge (no science fiction).
  5. Up to grade 4, entries should be illustrated. Illustrations may be done in any medium, and should enhance the idea of the poem, not be merely decorative. Entries from grades 5-8 may or may not be illustrated, at the optionof the author.
  6. Authors must write their name, grade, school, town and category into which they wish to enter their poem on the front of the poem. Categories are MOST ORIGINAL, MOST HUMOROUS POEM, MOST EXPRESSIVE POEM, BEST LONG POEM, BEST COOPERATIVE POEM, BEST MULTI-GRADE COOPERATIVE POEM, BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE POEM, BEST PHOTO-ILLUSTRATED POEM (grades 6, 7, 8) Poems not categorized cannot be judged. (Because we receive over 3000 entries-we do not have the time to categorize).
  7. Attach a signed Parental Release Form. No poem will be judged without a signed parental release form.
  8. Choose the best 4 or 5 entries from each class, a maximum of 35 entries per school. Teachers determine the method by which poems are chosen.
  9. DEADLINE: All poems must be received no later than March 17, 2005.
  10. Poems will NOT be returned.
  11. You may send photocopies.
  12. Make sure students and parents have a copy before you send poems to us.
  13. Fill out one entry form for your school and include it with student entries. You will find it in this contest packet (titled School/Class Entry Form).
