Dear Prospective Student:
Thank you for your interest in graduate study in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College.
The ancient philosopher Plutarch said: "The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled." The Lynch School also seeks to light a flame, to bring light,... "to improve the human condition through education," as our mission attests.
While the Lynch School enjoys the high ranking it has among research schools of education in U.S. News and World Report (18th for 2008), we believe that such ratings fall short of measuring an institution. Mission is more important than rank. It is a powerful force in shaping your graduate experience, establishing priorities within the School, and attracting faculty and students who share these values. You'll see the mission in printed form often, but it is actually more visible in the work and life goals of our faculty and students. We are seeking future students whose goals can be served by this mission.
The Lynch School was selected by the Carnegie Corporation to be a "Teachers for a New Era" school. We were one of only 11 institutions in the country to receive this important designation. Under the generous grant from Carnegie, the Lynch School is developing and implementing innovative programs in teacher preparation that involve many programs of the school, both in education and psychology. The TNE project is an example of the collaborative energy across departments and programs in the Lynch School.
The Carnegie grant is only one of several factors that indicate a bright future for the Lynch School as it enters its sixth decade of teaching, research, and service.
We hope you find that future, of which you may be a part, attractive. And that you, too, light a flame in the lives of others as an educator, psychologist, administrator, researcher, or policy-maker.
