Cradles to Crayons leverages resources within the community to help meet the needs of children living in poverty. In its mission statement, the organization describes its work as “provid[ing] children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play.” Utilizing a strong community network, Cradles to Crayons collects and distributes (free of charge!) new and nearly new children’s items, like clothing and backpacks, helping to provide children with the basic supplies they need both in and out of school.
Cradles to Crayons serves children and families in Boston and Philadelphia and will soon launch in Chicago. A City Connects partner for nine years, Cradles to Crayons has provided many Boston students with the supplies necessary to thrive in the classroom and beyond. Items like shoes, school supplies, and winter coats were provided to Boston Public students by Cradles to Crayons 798 times in the 2015-2016 school year alone!
