interdisciplinary majors

The HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INTERDISCIPLINARY MAJOR offers three areas of focus and is available as a second major to students in the Lynch School of Education who are pursuing Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education, in fulfillment of their arts and sciences program requirements for certification.  This interdisciplinary major is not an option for students majoring in Secondary Education. The interdisciplinary major is intended to provide students with a background in the fields of developmental counseling and educational psychology focusing on three areas:

  1. Human Services
  2. Organization Studies/Human Resources
  3. Community, Advocacy and Social Policy

Students in the Human Development major are not required to do field work but are encouraged to consider at least one of the Human Development Field Practicum courses.  Field practicum courses include 10 hours a week of volunteer work in community or human service agencies or programs and a weekly seminar:

  • In the Sophomore or Junior year, students may enroll in the Field Practicum PY 152.
  • In the Senior year, students may enroll in the Senior Field Practicum PY 245.

Note on Focus A:

The following courses are additional electives for students interested in non-school settings:
PY152 AND PY245 – Human Development Practica

Note on Focus B:

Students with a focus in Organization Studies-Human Resources are encouraged to pursue the Minor in Organization Studies-Human Resource Management offered collaboratively with the Carroll School of Management.  Students may obtain more information and an application form to declare the minor in Campion 104 or 106D.

This interdisciplinary major is the same as the Human Development primary major.  Students majoring in Early Childhood or Elementary Education are eligible to declare Human Development as a second major.
