Official Honors Program of the Lynch School of Education
Mission Statement: The Lynch School of Education Honors Program aims to encourage academic, personal, and professional success and foster community in and out of the classroom. Through specialized courses, community engagement and leadership, faculty support, and research opportunities, the LSOE Honors students will develop critical thinking, a sense of belonging, and the confidence to reach beyond the norm.
Scholarship and academic excellence are traditions at Boston College. To meet the needs of superior students, the Lynch School of Education offers an Honors Program. Students are admitted to the Honors Program by invitation only during their freshman or sophomore year, based upon prior academic accomplishment.
Since 1956, the Alpha and Omega Honor Society has been the official Honors Program of the Lynch School of Education. It was founded to cultivate the minds of Lynch School of Education students and provide them an opportunity to develop their intellectual and educational goals. This is accomplished through an individualized classroom setting and a specialized curriculum that challenges the students to maximize their potential in every aspect of college life.
First year students take one Lynch School class together each semester—APSY1030, Child Growth and Development in the fall, and APSY1031, Family, School and Society in the spring. During the final three undergraduate years, other courses may be designated as “honors” courses and students in the program will be advised to take these courses. Students must maintain a 3.5 GPA to remain in the program.
By participating in a variety of academic and service programs within the honors community, students are able to form strong bonds with each other and the rest of the Boston College environment. The goal of the Honors Program is to produce tomorrow’s leaders who will manifest the qualities of scholarship, reasoned judgment, and compassion in their future endeavors.
