Advising
Each new student in the Curriculum and
Instruction doctoral program is assigned a faculty advisor. You should
contact your faculty advisor before the first week of classes to plan
your
course of study. The faculty
advisor’s role is to ass
ist you in designing an individualized educational experience and in
negotiating your way through the program. You, however, are responsible
for reading and abiding by the rules set forth in the
Boston College Academic
Catalog, “Doctoral P
rograms Polices and Procedures” (online only), and other University publications.
You are responsible for meeting with your faculty advisor in the first semester of study to select courses. Your faculty advisor may or may not be your dissertation director, depending on the interests you develop over time.
Program of Study Committee
You
will have a “program of study” committee consisting of yourself, your
major advisor, and two additional Curriculum & Instruction faculty
members (to be selected by the
student and major advisor and
approved by the director of
the dissertation program).
The purpose of the committee is to guide you in selecting course work and a strong research focus that will result in a Program of Study (POS). The planned POS should be filed no later than the second semester after you begin course work in the program.
The POS must include coursework in the historical, philosophical, and theoretical foundations that inform your major area of study as well as substantive research strands within the major area. All doctoral POS ’s are expected to take adva ntage of the variety of perspectives and research experiences that the Curriculum & Instruction faculty provide. Changes can be made to a POS by filing a “Request for Doctoral Course Substitution” form, available from Campion 211.
