Curriculum and Instruction

master of education (m. ed.)

The Master's of Education (M.Ed.) program in Curriculum and Instruction is a 30 graduate credit hour program designed to accommodate a variety of interests and needs.

This program is highly recommended for

  • U.S. candidates who already possess an initial license but who want to enhance learning in their area of their licensure or explore new areas of interest such as teaching English Language Learners, universal design for learning, assessment and evaluation, policy and change, special education;
  • international students, who wish to learn about curriculum theories, instructional strategies, and other practice-related knowledge;
  • private school educators, 5th year students, and educators from a variety of areas such as publishing, curriculum design, and museum education; and
  • classroom teachers who wish to become teacher leaders in their schools and districts.

This degree program does not lead to licensure, nor are students in this program eligible to apply for supervised practicum experiences.

Programs of study are planned in consultation with a faculty advisor in order to meet each candidate's career goals and needs. In addition to two required courses, candidates select 8 additional courses, which provide much latitude and flexibility.

Program of Study

In planning their program of studies candidates can focus on a discipline or a cross-discipline area (4-6 courses).

Discipline focus areas provide knowledge and skills in one of the education fields such as (will open in new windows): Early Childhood, Elementary Education, English, Mathematics, Science, or History.

Cross-discipline focus areas address important themes in education such as (will open in new windows):
Assessment/Program Evaluation

Literacy, Language and Culture,
Policy, Leadership and Change in Education,
Special Education,
Teacher Leadership,
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Technology.

In addition, candidates can choose one of the specialty clusters which offers basic knowledge in current high needs in education such as (will open in new windows): Teaching English Language Learners, Technology, Assessment, Special Education and Policy, Leadership and Change in Education.
