In cities across the nation, the need for teachers prepared and eager to educate urban students is critical: expanding populations, an aging teaching force, and severe shortages in important subject areas create a growing demand.
The Lynch School of Education is committed to the improvement of education in the nation’s urban schools. The Donovan Urban Teaching Scholars Program, named after the Lynch School’s founding dean, Rev. Charles F. Donovan of the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus (Jesuits), embodies that commitment, and Donovan graduates are employed in schools in Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, and other major urban centers across the United States.
The Donovan Urban Teaching Scholars program is an intensive one-year master’s degree program in teacher preparation. Each year, the program recruits and supports a cohort of up to 30 graduate students and provides them with an academically challenging education specifically responsive to the concerns and needs of urban students, families, schools, and communities.
Donovan program applicants bring a wide variety of personal, academic, professional, and volunteer experiences. Some have worked in Upward Bound, Jesuit Volunteer Corps, City Year, or comparable programs. Others have organized youth programs in their own urban communities.
For the majority of applicants, the Donovan program is their initial step into urban teaching. Some have prior teaching experience, or hold certification in elementary or secondary education and want to add certification in, for example, special education or reading. Others are in the process of career change. All are dedicated to preparing themselves to work as teachers in urban schools.
Donovan program participants
• study with a cohort of graduate students dedicated to teaching in urban schools (The program begins with cohort courses in the summer and concludes with a six-week session the following summer)
• work toward a master of education (m.ed.) degree and full certification in one of five areas of study:
Early Childhood Education
Reading and Literacy
Special Needs Education
• receive a special scholarship covering one-half of tuition, in addition to regular financial assistance available to all graduate students
As a member of a Donovan cohort, you will
• take courses in education designed specifically for the Donovan Urban Teaching Scholars program
• work with veteran teachers experienced in mentoring new urban-based teachers
• participate in monthly seminars and other activities with a special focus on issues of particular interest to Donovan Urban Teachers
To apply to the Donovan program, you must
• demonstrate a prior commitment to meeting the needs of children and families in urban areas
• submit an application to the Lynch School of Education, Graduate Programs, and be accepted into a master of education program in early childhood, elementary, secondary, reading and literacy, or special needs educa

Applicants to the Donovan Program may also consider adding the Teaching English Language Learners (TELL) certificate program to their program of studies. The TELL certificate program, while not a licensure or certificate program, provides participants with the pedagogical content knowledge and practical experience to be qualified to serve the increasing number of English Language learners (ELLs) in public schools.
