Cawthorne Millennium Professor of Teacher Education for Urban Schools and Director of the Doctoral Program in Curriculum and Instruction, is one of ten education leaders from across the country elected to membership in the National Academy of Education for their pioneering efforts in educational research and policy development.

Founded in 1965 to advance the highest quality educational research and its use in policy formation and practice, the National Academy of Education (NAEd) is an honorary society that currently has 174 members and 17 foreign associates. Members are elected on the basis of outstanding scholarship or contributions to education. Nominations are submitted by individual members once a year for review and election by the entire membership.
In addition to serving on expert study panels that address pressing issues in education, members are also deeply engaged in NAEd’s professional development programs such as the NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, and the Predoctoral Fellowship in Adolescent Literacy administered with generous funding from Carnegie Corporation of New York.
Most recently, the National Academy of Education has undertaken an initiative to connect policymakers in a new administration and Congress with the best available evidence on selected education policy issues. The project is designed to help policymakers better understand key education issues and to strengthen their ability to formulate effective policies by providing them with independent, research-based information.
