Charles Cownie to Head Urban Catholic Teacher Corps
Charles Cownie, J.D. has accepted the position of Director of the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps of Boston College and the Archdiocese of Boston (UCTC) at the Roche Center for Catholic Education, effective June 25, 2012.
Cownie comes to Boston College and the Lynch School of Education from Loyola Marymount University (LMU), where he served as associate director of campus ministry, as well as a resident minister. He has previously served as a resident director at LMU and also as a high school teacher and campus minister at the Oratory School in Summit, New Jersey.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Santa Clara University, a Master’s of Arts in Education from Seton Hall University, and a Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School. While pursuing his Master’s degree at Seton Hall University, he participated in Educational Partners in Catholic Schools (EPICS), a volunteer service program similar to the UCTC, which is also part of the University Consortium for Catholic Education. This experience gave him the opportunity to teach, coach, and advise in an all-boys Catholic middle and high school.
“The greatest way to serve is to educate and the most purposeful education is Catholic education. For this reason I am very excited to join the Lynch School community as the Director of the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps,” Cownie stated. “I passionately offer all of my skills, education, experiences, and energy to supporting the student participants in the UCTC, as well as the program’s Catholic school collaborators.”
“Charles Cownie brings years of experience in Catholic Education to the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps. I look forward to working with him and know that he will be a tremendous asset as we continue to build on the success and partnerships of the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps,” said Roche Center for Catholic Education Executive Director Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill
