Liz Byron ’06, a Boston Public School teacher at the Gardner Pilot Academy in Allston, Massachusetts, is running a 155-mile ultramarathon through the Sahara Desert—and raising $50,000—to purchase 30 new laptops for her sixth-grade class. Read Chronicle story.
Muriel (“Bonnie”) Cagney ’06 received both the yearlong Ryan Fellowship from The Alain Locke Initiative and the Distinguished Fulbright Award in Teaching from the US-UK Fulbright Commission. She will spend January–June 2013 at Sheffield Hallam University in England through the Fulbright Fellowship before returning to the United States to participate in the Ryan Fellowship.
Allan Cameron, Ph.D. ’08, principal of Deerfield Elementary School in Westwood, Massachusetts, received a 2012 National Educator Award and an unrestricted $25,000 award from the Milken Family Foundation.
Mayra Canizales, M.Ed. ’09, an instructional coach at the Columbia Heights Education Campus, and Hope Harrod, M.Ed ’00, a fifth-grade teacher at the Burroughs Education Campus, each received an Excellence in Teaching Award and a $10,000 prize from the District of Columbia Public Schools. Both graduated from the Lynch School’s Donovan Urban Teaching Scholars Program.
Nick Poché, M.A. ’07, was named program coordinator for Tulane University’s School of Architecture.
Andrea J. Stairs, M.Ed. ’95, Ph.D. ’06; Kelly A. Donnell, Ph.D. ’04; and Alyssa Hadley Dunn ’05 researched and wrote Urban Teaching in America: Theory, Research, and Practice in K–12 Classrooms (Sage Publications), an overview to urban teaching.
Gabrielle Stanco, Ph.D. ’12, received the Bruce H. Choppin Memorial Award from the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), which recognizes outstanding doctoral dissertations that employ empirical research methods and use IEA data.
