Searching Employers and Designating Favorites
Before you can make an informed choice about the employers with whom you wish to interview, you must know something about them. Most recruiters have sent us information regarding their organization, law practice and recruiting processes. This information is available in the cabinets in the Career Services Resource Library (EW210). In addition many employers now have web sites and National Association for Law Placement (NALP) employer information forms may be accessed through www.nalpdirectory.com or through the Lexis/Nexis web site.
To search for specific employers through Symplicity, input details into the Keyword Search box, and/or choose an employer type from the drop-down menu then click the [Search] button.
If an employer has a profile or available positions, the employer name will be underlined.
Place an employer under the Favorite Employers tab by clicking on the [Add to Favorite] button in the Options column.
View a list of preferred employers by clicking on the [Favorites] tab. Take employers out of Favorites by clicking on the [Remove From Favorites] button
Bid for Employer
After you have researched participating employers, you can easily bid for those employers with whom you would like to interview. “Bidding” means selecting employers to whom you want to submit your resume. You may bid for as many employers as you would like. We ask, however, that students adhere to a 35 interview limit for on-campus interviews during the fall recruiting season.
How to Bid
To bid, please go to the OCI section of Symplicity. The employers are entered into different Sessions. On Campus Sessions are entered by date - for example, On Campus 8/26-9/28. Off Campus Sessions are entered by the City where they are located - for example, Chicago Off Campus.
Some employers contact us to request an on-campus interview schedule after the Session has opened. In this case, we will add additional employers under an "additional session" name. Please be sure to open those Sessions also and bid where appropriate.
If you have uploaded your resume, the Career Services Office will print your resume and send it to each employer for which you have bid.
Multi-Office
Some participating employers centralize their recruiting efforts and send one attorney to interview for more than one office. If an employer is interviewing for more than one office, it will be indicated under the employer's name, for example, it would say 2 offices: Boston, MA; New York, NY. If you bid for a multi-office employer, the system will prompt you to "rank" the cities in order of preference.
Lottery
The lottery is designed to give as large a number of students as possible the opportunity to interview, remembering that the interview is often the most important part of the hiring process. The lottery works best for those students whose resumes would not necessarily be chosen based on such prescreening criteria as grades or law review, but who have excellent qualifications and have the ability to “sell” themselves in the interview.
Employers who participate in the lottery (and most do) realize that resumes only transmit a limited amount of information. They also realize that they cannot always choose the best candidates by prescreening. Employers have been impressed with the sincere interest of those selected through the preference lottery system. Many students have received job offers through this system. Our experience has shown that students who are well-prepared, have made a thoughtful selection and can clearly articulate why they are interested in a certain firm or organization are most likely to enjoy a successful lottery interview. Although the employer knows which students received an interview through the lottery system, the individual interviewer may or may not know.
On-campus employers are asked to leave 25% of their schedule open for preference lottery selections. When you bid for employers in each Session, your top ten (10) choices of each Session will be included in the lottery.
All lottery candidates will be emailed AT THE SAME TIME AS candidates chosen by the employers. This way, all students will have the ability to sign up for interview times SIMULTANEOUSLY.
