Requirements
1) Pro Bono Pledge:
a. Even if you are not yet ready to accept a pro bono placement, but think you will in the future, we encourage you to sign the Pro Bono Pledge. By doing so, you commit to: contributing at least 50 hours of law-related community service through pro bono work while at Boston College Law School; reporting your hours accurately; and honoring any commitments you make to placement supervisors. We will keep the form on file for you in the Pro Bono Program Office.
2) Accumulating Hours:
a. In addition to client interaction, hours accumulated from pro bono work-related travel, trainings, meetings with supervisor, research, writing, etc. may be counted toward a participant’s hours.
b. Although we encourage students to record their hours with the Pro Bono Program once a month, they must record pro bono hours by: September 20th for summer hours; December 20th for fall hours; and May 20th for spring hours.
c. First-year students are permitted to record a maximum of 15 hours of pro bono work.
d. A maximum of 25 pro bono hours may be recorded for a clinical or unpaid public interest law internship.
3) Supervision:
a. All placements must be supervised.
b. A student’s supervisor must sign a placement initiation form.
Process for Participating Students
Students, in order to participate in a pro bono placement, please take the following steps:
1) Sign a Pro Bono Pledge.
2) Arrange your placement with approval of the Pro Bono Program Committee.
3) Complete your Placement Initiation Form, have your supervisor sign it, and submit it at the Pro Bono Program Office.
4) Perform your pro bono work and log your hours for your record keeping.
5) Submit your Pro Bono Logs regularly at the Pro Bono Program Office.
6) Complete your Placement Evaluation form and submit it to the Pro Bono Program Office.
Students may begin participating in the Pro Bono Program at any time while enrolled at Boston College Law School.
