Memo

TO: First and Second-Year Students
FROM: Elizabeth Rosselot, Registrar
DATE: April 12, 2006
RE: Course Registration, Fall 2006
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Registration for the 2006-07 Fall semester is scheduled for April 26 (2L’s) and April 27 (1L’s). Please review this memo carefully as it contains important information regarding registration.

Attached to this memo is the 2006-07 Academic Calendar, the Fall class schedule, and a list of the proposed Spring courses.

Academic Services on the Web
The Course Selection Handbook will be placed in your mailbox early next week. In the meantime, you can access course information and course descriptions by going to the Academic Services website. Please go to the Law School homepage at <http://www.bc.edu/lawschool> and click on “Academic information”. This website contains registration information including guidelines for course selection, course offerings and schedules; graduation requirements; and the adjunct and visiting faculty biographical information. A tentative fall exam schedule will be available and posted to this website by the week of registration. Academic information is continuously being updated, so be sure to bookmark this site.

Advising Session for Course Selection
We have scheduled one general advising session on Thursday, April 20, 12:30 in Stuart room 315. While it is open to all students, first-year students might especially find this session helpful.

General Registration Information
You will soon receive a degree audit listing the courses you have taken so far. The audit also indicates the time you are authorized to register for your Fall classes. Again, second-year students will register on Wednesday, April 26, and first-year students will register on Thursday, April 27. Authorization times begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue until 4:45 p.m. The system will allow you to register at, or after, your designated time. You must know your password to register.

You should plan your schedule carefully, including identifying first and second choice courses, before going on-line. Please make sure that your class meeting times do not overlap, as the University system will not allow you to register for one class that overlaps with another.

Several courses offer the option of earning an additional credit, which is usually satisfied by writing a substantial analytical paper. The system will list the courses with the lower credit option. If you are interested in taking a course for the higher credit option, you must register for the course as listed on the computer, then pick up a Course Exception Form from the Academic Services Office, or on our website. You must complete the form, have it signed by the professor, and then return it to Theresa Kachmar in Academic Services to obtain the credit override.

Independent Study
Independent studies are by arrangement only. To register for an independent study, please stop by Academic Services to pick up the necessary form. This form must be completed by the student, signed by the professor, and returned to Theresa Kachmar in Academic Services as soon as possible.

Clinical Programs
Clinical program applications and information are available outside the Academic Services Office, Stuart room M308. The application deadline for the Attorney General Clinical Program is 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, April 12. The deadline for all other clinical program applications is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19. Lottery results will be posted outside of Academic Services, Room M308, by mid-afternoon on Friday, April 21. You have until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 24, to confirm acceptance in a clinical program. Only those students who are accepted into a clinical program through the lottery may register for a clinical course.

Limited Enrollment
Some courses are designated “limited enrollment”. A limited enrollment class is one that is offered to 25 or fewer students. You may only register for two limited enrollment courses during the initial registration process. If you are eager to take a particular limited enrollment course, you should register at or near your authorized time. Even if the system appears to accept your efforts to register for more than two limited enrollment courses during the initial registration process, please note that any attempt by a student to enroll in more than two limited enrollment courses may result in the system dropping you from all of your courses. However, as of Friday, April 28, 2006, at 8:00 a.m., this two-course only, “limited enrollment” restriction is lifted, and you may register for additional limited enrollment courses, on a space-available basis.

If you enroll in a limited enrollment course, you must attend the first class (or speak to the faculty member before the first class) to hold your space. If you were not able to enroll in a particular limited enrollment class, you should attend the first class, or contact the professor before the first class, to indicate your interest. If, after your initial registration, you decide not to take a limited enrollment course, please drop the course as soon as possible so that the space will be available for a classmate.

Upper Level Credit and Course Requirements
You must earn at least 85 credit hours to graduate. Upon completing your first year, you will have obtained 33 credit hours. While you are required to take at least 12 credits each semester to be a full time student, we strongly advise students to take 26 credit hours per year. This will allow you to complete the remaining 52 credits, with a manageable course load your last two years.

In addition, you are also required to take a Professional Responsibility class, Constitutional Law II and a course that will fulfill the ABA Upper Level Writing requirement. You may satisfy this writing requirement in a number of ways, such as Journal participation, classes and seminars with a paper requirement, and Independent Studies. Please refer to the Academic Services’ website for an updated list of classes that satisfy these requirements.

Drop/Add
Computerized registration allows you to change your schedule as many times as you want, until the end of the drop/add period at 11:00 p.m. on September 5, 2006. You may drop any course as long as you have a minimum of 12 credits for the semester. You may add only those courses that are still open for enrollment.

Thank you for your attention to these matters, and good luck with next year’s course scheduling!
