Advocacy Memo (AM1 & AM2) A memo in which a particular point of view is taken in an attempt to persuade a decision-maker. The third and fourth major writing assignments in LRR&W are Advocacy Memos 1 and 2.
ASP Academic Support Program A series of structured tutorials for first-year subjects created by the school for students who feel they need more instruction than they are getting in class.
Bankruptcy Moot Court A national moot court competition which focuses on bankruptcy law issues. Our team consists of third-year students chosen from those who participated in the Grimes Moot Court competition.
Barat House A building on the Law School campus which houses the alumni affairs and development offices. It often is used for social events.
BSA Board of Student Advisors The student group in charge of the intra-school competitions: Client Counseling, Negotiations, Grimes Moot Court, and Mock Trial.

Clinical Programs Law School programs designed to teach students practical legal skills such as negotiation, client interviewing, and trial advocacy, through simulations or out-placement in a law office or court. Programs at BC Law include the Legal Assistance Bureau (LAB), Urban Legal Lab (ULL), Immigration Project, Juvenile Law Project, Massachusetts Attorney Generals Office, Chinatown Project, and criminal defense and prosecution.
Closed Memo A memo assignment in which all the case law, statutes and other sources needed to write the memo are distributed to the students. Research beyond these materials is not necessary or encouraged.
Craven Moot Court A national competition which focuses on constitutional law issues. Students prepare briefs and argue their cases at the University of North Carolina. Our team consists of third-year students chosen from those who participated in the Grimes Moot Court competition.
Environmental Moot Court A national competition which focuses on environmental law issues. Students prepare briefs and argue their cases in White Plains, New York. Our team consists of third-year students chosen from those who participated in the Grimes Moot Court competition.
Face Book A picture book of the first year law class, prepared by the school to help the students and faculty learn each others names.
Frederick Douglass Moot Court A student competition involving an issue of particular concern to minorities. Students prepare briefs and argue their cases before a panel of lawyers and judges. Sponsored by the National Black Law Students Association.
Grimes Moot Court An intra-school competition open only to second-year students. It involves the appeal of a hypothetical trial and appellate court decision. Teams of two students write and argue briefs before a panel of lawyers and judges. This competition is a prerequisite to involvement on a team for any of the National Moot Court competitions in the third year.
ILPR Introduction to Lawyering and Professional Responsibility Part of the first-year curriculum that involves simulation exercises to examine lawyering techniques and issues of professional responsibility. This class has the smallest student to faculty ratio in the first-year curriculum.
Jessup Competition A moot court competition involving issues of international law. It is organized by the American Society of International Law and is open to second- and third-year law students.
Kenny-Cottle Library The former Law Library, it is now used as a storage space for ONeill Library books and as office space for non-law school projects. The building is scheduled to be renovated in the future and turned into a cafeteria.
LAB Legal Assistance Bureau The Law Schools teaching law office is located in Waltham, Massachusetts. Students work with clients and are responsible for interviewing, trial work, and appellate briefs. The fieldwork is supervised by faculty.
Law Review - A student-edited, scholarly publication that contains contributions from legal scholars, practitioners, judges, and law students. There are four law reviews published at BC Law Law School: the Boston College Law Review, Boston College Environmental Affairs Law Review, Boston College International and Comparative Law Review, and Boston College Third World Law Journal.
Law Revue A show written by and starring law students that takes a humorous look at life at BC Law.
LRR&W Legal Reasoning, Research, and Writing A five-credit first-year required course in which students are introduced to legal research and writing. Each of the six sections has as its faculty a Law School Writing Professor and a Legal Reference Librarian.
LSA Law Student Association The student government at Boston College Law School. It is the umbrella organization for many of the student organizations.
Mock Trial A competition open to third-year students which requires active involvement in a hypothetical trial situation. Sponsored by the Young Lawyers' Committee of the Texas Bar Association, the finals are held in the Lone Star State.
Moot Court A simulated appeal including writing briefs and presenting oral arguments to a mock appellate court.
NALP Directory The National Association of Law Placement solicits information from law firms regarding their practice, size, salaries, and other information. NALP publishes the information each year in a paperback directory. It is available at the Law Library Information Desk, in the Career Services Library, and on WESTLAW.
National Moot Court Teams of three students are involved in a general moot court competition, where they brief and argue issues before panels of lawyers and judges. The final rounds are held in New York City.
Negotiations Competition Two-member student teams conduct simulated negotiations involving current legal topics. This competition is sponsored by the American Bar Association. Teams consisting primarily of 1Ls compete within the school. The winning team then competes locally, and if the team wins our regional competition it may compete nationally in New Orleans.
Objective Memo 1 and 2 (OM1 & OM2) The first and second major writing assignments in LRR&W. These assignments require students to analyze the law of a given legal issue, apply it to the facts of their client's problem, and write a memorandum predicting their client's likely outcome in a court of law. OM1 is a closed memo, while OM2 requires students to do their own research.
PAD Directory A current list of BC Law student addresses and phone numbers, published by Phi Alpha Delta, a national legal fraternal organization of men and women.
Semester in Practice Urban Legal Lab A program which places students in law offices, courts, government agencies, and public interest groups in the greater Boston area. Students spend approximately 30 hours per week in the office as well as time in the classroom.
UCC Reporter Digest Part of a commercially-produced loose-leaf service on the Uniform Commercial Code. It is prepared by second- and third-year BC Law students who summarize and comment on recent cases involving the UCC.
