Newton, MA--The Clough Center for the Study of Constitutional Democracy at Boston College has announced its inaugural Public Interest Law Scholars. Twelve BC Law students have received the $5,000 grants, awarded to first- and second-year law students for uncompensated public interest work, in the United States or abroad, during the summer of 2013.

“The competition for these awards was fierce and I am delighted with the group we have selected,” said Clough Center Director and BC Law professor Vlad Perju.

Applicants went through a rigorous process, submitting a statement of interest, resume, transcripts and an academic letter of recommendation, as well as a description of the organization for which they would be working, along with a brief substantive statement of the nature of the work they would perform and how the position would relate to the mission of the Clough Center. Applicants were then interviewed individually before final selections were made.

All recipients will become Inaugural Clough Public Interest Law Scholars for the 2013-2014 academic year. In that capacity, they will be expected to participate in the Center’s programs during the academic year of the appointment both in the Law School and throughout the University. They will enjoy members-only events and discussions, providing a unique forum for intellectual discourse.

Clough Public Interest grants cannot be held in conjunction with a Law School Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) grant. However, all positions that qualify for a PILF award through the Law School were eligible for the Clough award with the exception of judicial internships, provided that the position will allow the student to explore some relevant aspect of constitutional democracy.
