Connecting to the BC Network using a modem to dial-in
(Instructions on how to configure a dial-up connection to the BC network)

BC Modem Pool
BC's modem pool connects at speeds up to 56kbps. Slower speed modems (33.6kbps and 28.8 kbps) also work, but we do not recommend anything slower. If you live within the local calling area of Boston College, connecting to the BC network via a modem is free of charge.

Limitations of the Modem Pool
Important: BC's Remote Access system has limited connections, and there is no plan to significantly expand or upgrade BC's modem pool. At peak times, this service is heavily used and you may encounter busy signals. If peak time availability is important to you, consider using an external ISP (Internet Service Provider), such as AOL, RCN, or Comcast Broadband.

We suggest that you consider an external ISP (Internet Service Provider).

VPN (Virtual Private Network) at BC

Do you have an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and need remote access to restricted library databases? Are you accessing confidential BC information from home that should be encrypted while traveling on the Internet? Do you want remote access to a server on campus that is behind BC's security firewall? If so, then you may be interested in purchasing and using a virtual private network (a.k.a. "VPN") client to perform these tasks from your remote computer. VPN Information.
