Access

  • Law Library computing facilities are open to the Boston College Law School community. Priority is given to actively enrolled Boston College Law School students.

  • Undergraduates and non-law graduate students. Boston College undergraduates and non-Law School graduate students are not authorized to use the Law Library computing facilities. These students have access to the Campus Technology Resource Center located in the O'Neill Library on the Chestnut Hill campus.

All students from other institutions. These students are not authorized to use the Law Library computing facilities. There are no reciprocal agreements between BC Law and other institutions regarding access to computer services.

    Law Library computing facility hours.

  • A workstation may be used for up to 3 hours. Additional time is allowed if there is no queue.
  • Computers left unattended for more than 15 minutes will be given to the next waiting user.
  • Access is available to other portions of the BC community under certain circumstances and with limitations.

General Policies

  • Absolutely no food or drink will be allowed in any computing facility at any time.
  • Users must save to a floppy or Zip disk. It is not possible to save data permanently to any of the hard disks. Anything saved to the Temporary User Storage folder will be deleted.
  • Do not leave valuable personal property unattended. Boston College Law Library is not responsible for the loss or theft of any personal property.
  • Children must be attended at all times. Parents are responsible for the safety and all the actions of their children.
  • If there is something wrong with the software or the hardware, notify the monitor immediately.
  • The phone at the monitor's desk in room 300 connects to Lexis, Westlaw and BC numbers. The phone in room 155 connects to Westlaw. No other calls can be made from these phones. Public pay phones and free intra-campus phones are located in the lobby outside the library's main entrance.
  • Please keep the computing facilities clean. Trash cans and recycling bins are located in each room.
  • The Brian P. Lutch Computer Center is also a teaching facility and may at times be reserved by the law library staff for training and educational programs. Every effort will be made to give advance notice of times when the Computer Center will be unavailable.
  • The Computer-Assisted Learning Centers (Rooms 153 and 155) are open for student use when not reserved for educational programs. Weekly schedules are posted on the doors.

Printing Policies

  • Printing policies at BC Law are currently under review.
  • At present, Boston College Law Library provides laser printing at no charge to currently enrolled Boston College law students. However, this policy allows each user only one copy of each document. Multiple copies sent to the printer slow down the queue causing delays to all users.
  • Printing of documents downloaded from Lexis/Nexis or WESTLAW is restricted to documents not available in the library's print collections. Printing is expensive and time consuming and should not be a substitute for photocopying.
  • Laser printer output will be on white 8 1/2 x 11 paper.
  • Printing to special papers, labels, and envelopes is allowed as a manual feed option only. Please ask a monitor for assistance. Printing on transparency film is not allowed.

Computer Center Equipment

  • ZoomText, a vision resource utility, is installed on workstation LutchA7 in room 300. Students are welcome to use this workstation if there is no other available. However, they are required to relinquish it if it is required by a person with special vision needs.
  • It is not possible to save data permanently to any of the hard disks. Files in the Temporary User Storage folders are removed on a daily basis.
  • CD/DVD drives are available to play audio CDs or DVDs. Headphones are supplied by the user and must be worn.
  • Connecting any computer peripherals to any computer in any way is not allowed. Only headphones may be plugged into the computer.
  • If there is anything wrong with any piece of equipment, please notify the monitor immediately.
  • Users are expected to be as careful with the equipment as they would be with their own. Equipment should never be moved or adjusted in any way.
  • Don't modify the system configuration. Due to the complex environment in which they operate and the multitude of user needs, each machine is very carefully and specifically configured. Changing the system configuration on any machine may render it dysfunctional. This includes adding, deleting, or changing any piece of software.

Courtesy to Others

  • Please be respectful of others. If there is a wait, please do not interrupt others by asking to use their workstations momentarily or by asking when they will be finished.
  • Conversation should be kept to a minimum so as not to disturb others. Remember that these computing facilities are located in the library and noise may not only disrupt others in the lab, but those studying in nearby reading areas.
  • A Courtesy Lab has been established in room 153. These workstations are to be used by students who require a silent work environment.

Computer Center Privileges

  • Under extreme circumstances, a user may lose computer facility privileges. Such loss may be at the discretion of the monitor on duty, the Dean for Students, or the Boston College Police Department. Any of the following acts will result in the suspension or permanent loss of computing privileges:
  • Destruction or tampering with any of the equipment.
  • Violation of copyright laws, including, but not limited to, copying software or copyrighted documents or documentation.
  • Installing personal software or tampering in any way with the system configuration on any law library workstation.
  • Attempted theft or removal of any equipment or materials from any facility. Such attempts will be reported to the B.C. Police Department.
  • Attempted use of false and/or altered identification. Such attempts will be reported to the BC Police Department.
  • Repeated or serious violation of library policies or repeated disruption of any of the Library's computing facilities.
  • Violation of any of the University's policies on ethical use of computing and communications services.
