Reserves Collections
Many items in the law library collection do not circulate. Items in the circulating collection may be borrowed by current Boston College students, faculty and staff only. Borrowers are responsible for the material they have checked out.
Loan periods:
| Students | 28 days |
| Law Faculty | current academic year |
| Other Faculty | current semester |
| Staff | 120 days |
Note: Boston College alumni and others with guest borrowing privileges administered through the O'Neill Library are not eligible to borrow materials from the law library.
Borrowers are responsible for all materials checked out to their account. Non-returned or damaged items will result in per-item charges of $95 (a $65 replacement fee and a $30 processing fee.) Non-return of a recalled item may result in the temporary suspension of borrowing privileges. In the case of Boston College students, unpaid library fees are sent to Student Accounts, with an additional $5 charge for billing. Students who do not resolve their accounts may be subject to diploma, registration and transcript holds.
Law library materials may be returned to any Boston College library. For your convenience, a book drop is located in the lobby area between the intercampus phones adjacent to the law library's entrance.
Renewals
Items from the law library's collection may be renewed unless they have been requested by another user or the renewal limit has been reached. Contact the Information Desk at 617-552-4434 to request a renewal. You also may renew items online:
- Go to the Quest online catalog, select "Sign in to My Quest Account," and enter your BC username and PIN.
- Click on "View/Review Loans" and then select the number of the item to be renewed. A Loan Details window will open.
- Click on the "Renew" link to extend your loan.
- Check to verify that a new due date has been established. Please note that you cannot renew items online if you have any overdue books checked out to your account.
Recalls and Other Requests
You may recall items that are checked out to another user, items that are shelved in a remote storage location, and items that are on order or in process. To request online:
- Go to the Quest online catalog, click on "Sign in to My Quest Account" and enter your BC username and PIN.
- Be sure you have signed in to your Quest account.
- Select the "Request" link to the left of the desired item. A Recall/Request Form window will open.
- Be sure to select a pickup location (the library where you want to pick up the item). If you don't specify one, the system will assign a pickup location of O'Neill Library.
- Click "Send." A window should open to confirm that your request was registered.
You will be notified by e-mail when the book is available. Recalls and other requests can also be placed for you by Information Desk staff.
You may also view a list of your current recalls and delivery requests:
- Go to the Quest online catalog, click on "Sign in to My Quest Account" and enter your BC username and PIN.
- Under "Activities," click on "Recalls/Deliver Requests."
Recalled items. Recall requests shorten the loan period for the original borrower, who is guaranteed a minimum loan period of 14 days, and is given 10 additional days to return an item once it has been recalled. Borrowers are notified by e-mail when an item checked out to them has been recalled. Please note that all patrons are responsible for honoring recall requests. If the item is not returned by the due date specified in the e-mail, borrowing privileges will be suspended until the item is returned.
Other Requests. The "Request" link may be used to request an item from a remote storage collection (New England Deposit Library, Kenny-Cottle Library, Newton Resource Center) or to request an item that is on order or in process.
Reserves Collections
Course Reserves and Permanent Reserves Collections are located behind the Information Desk. Items can be borrowed for 2 hours and can be renewed for additional 2-hour periods if they have not been reserved by other patrons. Items must be returned before the library closes. They may not be removed from the library at any time. Overnight loans of these items are not permitted.
