Newsletter Spring/Summer 2007

Dear Students,

Summertimethe word brings to mind images of sun, sand, surf, cookouts, and late, starry nights. The academic year is over and now on to jobs as summer associates, research assistants, internships, or just earning some $$$. Please try to fit some well-deserved R&R into the mix.

This summer issue of the Law Library Newsletter has information on a plethora of subjects that we hope will interest you and that you will find useful such as summer access to LEXIS and WESTLAW; legal research on a shoestring; keeping your computer virus free; and podcasting. Please take a look at it and contact the Law Library staff with questions about anything you seewe would love to hear from you over the summer.

Oh yes, one more thing, remember to wear sunscreen.

Peace, Filippa

Summer Access to LexisNexis, Loislaw and Westlaw

Students access to LexisNexis and Westlaw is provided by the Law School to support academic year activities. Passwords are deactivated after exams at the end of the academic year. Students who are employed as Research Assistants for BC Law faculty members and students who are employed in certain unpaid internships may apply to have their passwords extended for summer use. In addition, the Law School offers students year-round access to Loislaw, an alternative online research service. For details on password extension and Loislaw subscription procedures, check this document: http://www.bc.edu/schools/law/library/meta-elements/pdf/home_page_items/pdf/student_summer_access_20071.pdf

Question: What is the difference between a law review index and a full-text database?

Dear Student,

With a law review index database, a human being has looked at the article in question and provided a pointer to the main topic of the article, in addition to information on the author, title, where the article was published. A full-text database contains the complete actual article. Both are useful in locating relevant articles, and which one works better depends on your research situation. Learn more here.

Computing News

Laptop Preparation for Exams on Computers:

As exam time approaches the ATR staff would like to remind you to make sure that your virus and spyware software is up-to-date and to run virus and spyware checks before exams.

The primary cause of problems with ExamSoft during exams is the presence of spyware. Running spyware and anti-virus scans will dramatically reduce the chance of encountering problems during your exams.

Below are links to the BC sites with links to download Spybot, Ad-Aware and MacAfee anti-virus.

Best of luck to all of you during exams.

The ATR Staff

Ad-Aware and Spybot:

MacAfee Anti-Virus:

Note: BEFORE installing MacAfee you must check to see if any other anti-virus program (Norton, Symantec etc) has been installed on your computer. The presence of more than one anti-virus program on your computer will create serious problems. If you have any questions about checking for other anti-virus programs or uninstalling them, please drop-by the Help Center (Law Library 205) and we will be happy to assist you.
