BACKGROUND

Maritza Karmely recently joined the faculty as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Law.  Professor Karmely comes to Boston College Law School from a position as Staff Attorney at Casa Myrna Vazquez in Boston, where she represented women – including many immigrant women – in matters of domestic violence and other areas. 

Before working at Casa Myrna, Professor Karmely was a litigation associate with the Boston law firms Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and Todd & Weld.  During her years in private practice, she specialized in corporate litigation while also devoting considerable time to numerous pro bono matters.

Professor Karmely's scholarly interests include matters of domestic violence, human rights and immigration.  Professor Karmely holds a B.S. in Economics from Boston College and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law.

RECENT ACTIVITIES

Work in Process: Child Custody Law Reform Movement.

Appointments: Elected to the board of directors of the Latin American Health Institute in Boston, a community-based public health organization.

Other: Professor Karmely participates in the Family Law Task Force Against Domestic Violence’s state-wide advocacy efforts to improve family law outcomes for indigent and unrepresented victims of violence, conducts trainings and mentors attorneys participating in the Woman’s Bar Association’s Family Law Project for Battered Women, assisted in the Catholic Charities’ Immigration Clinic, and provided tax preparation assistance for low-income individuals through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.
