BACKGROUND
Mary Ann Chirba-Martin holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Colgate University and a J.D., magna cum laude, from Boston College Law School. In 1994, she received a Master's degree in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health and is currently working toward her doctorate in Health Policy there. She holds the distinction of being the only attorney from the U.S. to win admission to the program. Since 1984, Professor Chirba-Martin has taught a variety of courses at the Boston College Law School, including Health Law & Policy and Advocacy Writing. She has also served lecturer at the Harvard School of Public Health, where she taught Pharmaceutical Product Safety, Current Developments in Health Law, and Medical Malpractice and Risk Management. She was appointed Assistant Professor of Legal Reasoning, Research & Writing at the Boston College Law School in 1999. Her recent publications deal with various aspects of health care reform, including managed competition initiatives as well as ERISA preemption of state efforts to regulate managed care. She has also worked as a health policy consultant to various states in their efforts to address the increasing market penetration of managed care in the delivery and finance of health care. RECENT ACTIVITIES Appointments: Elected to the board of directors of the New England Patient Education and Advocacy Center. Other: Professor Chirba-Martin serves on the Board of Directors of MassPRO, the Massachusetts Medical Society's Peer Review Organization. She has also assisted the Massachusetts Healthy Start Coalition in seeking state legislation to improve access to health care for indigent children.
