    BACKGROUND

Professor Daniel Barnett joined the faculty at Boston College Law School in 1990 and teaches Legal Reasoning, Research and Writing.  In May 2004, he received the 2004 Boston College Distinguished Teaching Award, and received the award again in 2007.  Professor Barnett has been active in the Association of American Law Schools, serving as the Chair of the Section on Legal Writing, Analysis and Research and as the Chair of the Military Recruiting Task Force of the Section on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues.  In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors for the Legal Writing Institute, Chair of the Planning Committee for the 2010 LWI Conference, and was the Co-Chair of the Institute’s 2002 Biennial Conference.  Professor Barnett has given presentations at several academic conferences, including: Using Technology to Improve Critique at the New England Consortium of Legal Writing Teachers; Military Policy Towards Sexual Minorities and Its Impact on Campus: The Culture Wars Go to Law School at the Association of American Law Schools Annual Meeting, Program of the Section on Gay and Lesbian Legal Issues; and Designing Effective Legal Writing Problems:  Balancing Pedagogy and the Realities of Law Practice, at the Legal Writing Institute.  Professor Barnett designed and led workshops on critiquing student work at the 2004 national conference of the Legal Writing Institute and the 2003 New Teachers Workshop, sponsored by the Association of American Law Schools. 

In addition to teaching at the law school, Professor Barnett spent a semester in France in 2002 as the Visiting Professor of American Law at the University of Avignon where he taught, in French, Le Droit du Contrat aux Etats-Unis.  He also consults the bar on lawyer-training issues and has developed and led training programs for the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General and several Boston-area law firms, including Choate Hall and Stewart and Brown Rudnick. 

Before joining the faculty at Boston College, Professor Barnett practiced law at Kutak Rock in New York, and McDonough, Holland & Allen in Sacramento, California, where he specialized in corporate and securities law.

Member of the 2008 Biennial Conference Program Committee and chair of the Long-Term Conference Planning Committee of the Legal Writing Institute. Member of the Lifetime Achievement Nomination Committee of the Association of American Law Schools Section on Legal Writing, Reasoning, and Research. Member of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Executive Committee and the AALS Section on Legal Writing, Reasoning, and Research. Member of the Legal Writing Institute Board of Directors.

Appointments: Chair of the Association of American Law Schools Section on Legal Writing, Reasoning, and Research.

Other: Writing consultant at Brown, Rudnick, Berlack, Israels LLP in Boston. Recipient of the Boston College 2007 and 2004 Distinguished Teaching Award. Visiting professor of American law at Université d’Avignon et des Pays du Vaucluse, Avignon, France, for the spring 2002 semester.
