It's Who You Know

getting connected through social networking

By Tracey Palmer

Are you linked in? Do you have fans? How many contacts did you make this week?

If you’re a member of the BC Law community using social networking sites, you’re not alone. Alumni, students, and professors are blogging, tweeting, friending, and linking up--including through the Law School's own online community, BC LawNet.

The number of people frequenting sites related to BC Law is substantial, and growing. A Linkedin group created by an alumnus has more than 1,000 members. Search on the words BC Law in Facebook and you’ll get some 500 hits, at least 100 of which link to live and virtual groups created by and for people affiliated with BC law school, from amateur rugby players to environmental law activists to alumni who are “really, really ridiculously good-looking” (that group has 45 members, in case you’re wondering). Numerous groups serve alumni of a particular graduating class, while others are organized around a shared interest in an area of the law or practice.

Whether they are reconnecting with each other and the school, finding job leads, making professional contacts, or sharing their expertise, BC Law alumni are making the most of social networking sites. It’s a great tool, says Soo Lim, associate director of career services at the Law School, but proceed with caution.

"Once you put something out there, it’s up there forever. You can’t take it back and undo," she says.

Still, in today’s uncertain economic environment, social networking sites, if used wisely, can offer a valuable professional lifeline. If you’re ready to leverage the BC Law social network, here are a few places to start:
