This monumental vote of our Alumni Association ratifying and adopting the newly-proposed constitution and bylaws is the latest in what I view as an ongoing exchange between the Law School and the Alumni Association.
It all began well over a year ago when the law school asked alumni for their opinions about alumni relations at Boston College Law School. In its collective response, the members of the Alumni Association made it quite clear that our alumni love the Law School, just as we did when we were students, but most of us feel disconnected from it.
The Law School—through the strategic work of a specially-assembled Task Force on Alumni Relations, and the careful and passionate consideration of the Task Force’s proposed strategy and structure by the Alumni Council—responded with a proposal to overhaul alumni relations. That proposal was designed to ensure that the new structure for alumni association governance addresses the pervasive concerns voiced by the Alumni Association. The heart of the proposal’s mission is to find better ways for more alumni to reconnect with and become involved in the life of the Law School. It is not the least bit surprising, then, that the Alumni Association has responded with a collective and overwhelming nod to the proposal.
The conversation, however, is not over; instead, it now moves to a new level. With the approved structure ready to take effect, our Law School is asking the next and most exciting question: who wants to lead?
The work of the Task Force, the Alumni Council and the Office of Institutional Advancement has laid the foundation upon which the new Alumni Association can be built. The most exciting part of the new structure is its open invitation for alumni who have an interest in contributing to the success of the new organization—or in taking a leadership role—to join us. The Law School is looking far and wide for those who want to give back to the Law School, support its students and reconnect with our fellow alumni. Our goal is to engage the broadest possible range of alumni. Whether you have been involved in the past, or whether your association with BC Law has been limited to the parchment framed on your office wall, you are most welcome to contribute to our new organization.
The Special Committee that will recommend the first slate of candidates for leadership positions in the new structure is being assembled right now, and will be calling for great leaders and contributors all over the country. I am confident many in our ranks will respond as favorably as we all did in the latest vote.
Decide how you will respond to this latest question in the conversation. This is an opportunity to be part of something new and wonderful. Make sure you “speak up” if you don’t want to miss out! Look for the “Volunteer” link below for more information.
Sincerely,
Brian Falvey
