John
J. McHale, Jr.
Executive Vice President of Administration, Major League
Baseball
John McHale Jr. was named Major League Baseball Executive Vice President of
Administration on March 7, 2002. In that position, he is responsible for
five MLB departments: Public Relations, Information Technology,
Scheduling, Club Relations, and Government Relations. He also oversees
MLB’s Western Office in Phoenix
and the services provided by MLB to the Baseball Assistance Team. McHale
is a member of the Board of Directors of Major League Baseball Advance Media,
The Baseball Tomorrow Fund and BELP II, Major League Baseball’s investment
fund.
McHale served as Tampa Bay Devil Rays Chief Operating Officer in 2001.
From 1995 until 2001 he was the President and Chief Executive Officer of the
Detroit Tigers. While with the Tigers, McHale was responsible for the
public campaigns and elections approving a new ballpark followed by the
planning and construction of the club’s new home, Comerica Park.
From mid-1991 through 1994, McHale served first as Executive Vice President of
Baseball Operations and then Executive Vice President of Business Operations
for the National League expansion team, the Colorado Rockies.
Prior to 1991, McHale practiced law in Denver.
He was the first Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Denver Metropolitan
Major League Baseball Stadium District, created in 1989. The Board
financed and ran an election for public approval of the financing for what
would become Coors Field. Following voter approval, the Board acquired
land, and planned, designed and built the ballpark.
A 1971 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, McHale received law degrees
from Boston College
Law School
in 1975 and the Georgetown
University Law
Center in 1982. While at
Notre Dame, he played defensive end and linebacker on the football team. McHale
and his wife, Sally, have three children, Duncan, William and Frances.
Michael
E. Mooney
Managing Partner, Nutter McClennen & Fish LLP
Michael E. Mooney is Nutter's managing partner. A tax attorney, he maintains an
active tax and business practice. Michael represents corporations and other
businesses in a broad range of domestic and international tax issues. He
advises clients on all aspects of complex business combinations and
divestitures, such as tax-free corporate reorganizations and spin-offs.
Michael also assists individuals with personal tax planning and works with businesses
and individuals in designing and implementing executive compensation programs.
He has handled many successful tax controversies before the Internal Revenue
Service and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and Appellate Tax Board. He
frequently works with family businesses to reorganize into more tax-efficient
structures and provide for intergenerational transfers at minimal tax cost.
Michael is a fellow of the American
College of Tax Counsel,
vice president, executive director and member of the Board of Directors of the
Federal Tax Institute of New England Inc., a member of the Boston Tax Forum,
and a member of the Board of Editors of Accounting and Financial Planning for
Law Firms.
Michael appears in Who’s Who in America,
Who’s Who in American Law, and The Best Lawyers in America. Boston magazine named Michael one of the top
100 Massachusetts Super Lawyers in 2004-2006. He writes and speaks frequently
on topics related to taxation and executive compensation.
Active in many business, civic, and charitable organizations in Greater Boston,
Michael is a director of Jobs for Massachusetts,
an executive leadership organization of CEOs from prominent Boston businesses. He is currently chair of
the Board of Directors of A Better City and co-chair of the Boston Bar
Association Diversity Task Force. He has served as co-chair of the South
Boston Waterfront Gateways Study in collaboration with the City of
Boston/Boston Redevelopment Authority’s Greenway Crossroads Initiative
2004-2006. He has also served as co-chair of the Professional Services Division
of the United Way
of Massachusetts Bay 2002-2004 campaigns and is a founding co-chair of the
Lawyers Leadership Breakfast. He has served as legal counsel to and clerk
of the USS Constitution Bicentennial Salute, Inc. and Sail Boston 2000, Inc.,
and currently acts as legal counsel to Sail Boston 2009. For nearly ten
years Michael has been a co-chair of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund Annual
Dinner, sponsored by the Catholic Charities. He is the founding chairman
of the Boston Bar Association Summer Jobs Program, and served as chair of the
2003 Law Day Dinner Steering Committee. He is a director of the Lincoln and Therese
Filene Foundation and Music Lives, and a member of The Chief Executives’ Club
of Boston.
As managing partner, Michael is chairman of the firm's Executive Committee. He
has also served as manager of the Tax Department and chair of the firm's
International practice group.
Michael received a J.D. degree from Boston
College Law
School. A native of
Wisconsin, he received a B.A. from St. Norbert
College.
