Student Organizations

The Student Collective, which has four elected officers and serves as the governing body of GSSW students, promotes communication among students, represents student views to faculty and staff, and enhances student life.

The Collective facilitates a variety of student events with nine GSSW student organizations. The Collective also maintains contact with other graduate students at BC through social and academic events and through involvement with the Graduate Student Association.

The GSSW student organizations are:

  • Common Ground, formed by a diverse group of students to provide a forum to address issues of difference on personal, interpersonal, and societal levels. Common Ground seeks students interested in moving beyond mere tolerance to an understanding and appreciation of difference.
  • Community Action Committee, which promotes student involvement in social justice activities and advocacy initiatives.
  • Globe is a student group bringing GSSW international students and their allies together to provide a welcoming environment for international students and to advocate on their behalf in the GSSW and throughout the Boston College community.
  • HIV/AIDS Committee, which seeks to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS among members of the GSSW Community.
  • Social Events Committee, which plans events overseen by the Social Events Coordinator, including barbecues, holiday celebrations, and monthly activities promoting community.
  • Social Work and Spirituality, a forum for students of various spiritual backgrounds to explore the intersection between their spiritual beliefs and practices and their professional practice as social workers.
  • Spectrum, created for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students and their allies to educate and inform the larger social work community about diversity, homophobia, heterosexism, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
  • Three-Year Program Student Group supports students in the three or four year programs of study.
  • Umoja/Student Organization for People of Color, to provide support for students of Asian, Native American, African, and Latino ancestry and to increase the community's awareness of issues related to people of color.
