"The future success of social service agencies depends upon the development of new approaches to solving social problems."
— Professor Stephanie Berzin
Professor Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes and Professor Stephanie Berzin took leadership roles in the establishment of the BCSSW macro program: Social Innovation and Leadership Program and Collaborative (SIL). Social innovation represents a new paradigm that supports the development, implementation, and sustainability of transformational responses to social needs.
The SIL Program engages emerging leaders enrolled in the MSW program in courses that examine various aspects of social innovation, develop competencies that will be needed for leading social service organizations in the future, and provide experiential learning opportunities at human service organizations. The Social Innovation Collaborative (LAB) includes projects, events, and activities designed to promote "social innovation from within" existing social service organizations. Four Boston-based social service agencies participated in the 2011 Social Innovation LAB; Dr. Pitt-Catsouphes notes, "the Innovation Teams and Project Champions from the LAB agencies have started to engage in learning experiences that have the potential to transform their organizations' services and practices."
