Clinical vs. Macro Social Work

We prepare you for a career in either of two types of social work: clinical or macro.

Our Clinical Practice concentration prepares you for a broad range of careers and focuses on direct service to those in need. You will learn to examine the biological, psychological, and social aspects of each problem you confront. Clinical Practice graduates work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, substance abuse centers, homeless shelters, prisons, churches, schools, and other human service agencies. If you prefer serving individuals, families, and small groups on a more intimate level, we recommend Clinical Practice.

Our Macro Practice concentration focuses on policy and how to work with organizations and communities. You'll learn human services administration, from how to plan programs and get financing, to how to manage personnel and be a leader in your profession. We'll teach you effective community mobilization and political strategy—essentially how to initiate and sustain change—often leading to careers with legislators and in management of human service agencies. If you like to work with organizations and communities and prefer to work in management and administration, we recommend Macro Practice.
