Professor and former Dean of the Graduate School of School Work Edmund "Ed" Burke, died Monday, November 3 after a brief illness.
Dr. Burke's tenure at Boston College spanned many years beginning with his studies at the School of Social Work, earning an M.S.W in 1956. He later
received a doctorate in urban planning from the University of Pittsburgh and joined the faculty of the BC Graduate School of Social Work in 1965. After serving as Dean from 1971 to 1976, Dr. Burke served as a member of the Domestic Policy Unit at the White House under President Jimmy Carter. In 1985 he founded the Center for Community Relations, now known as the Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College
Throughout his long and distinguished career Dr. Burke remained committed to the ideal of involving the community in the design of responses to social issues. He will be mourned by his family, classmates, alumni, and colleagues and remembered for his joyful optimism and exuberant spirit.
