Health Coverage

graduate school of arts and sciences

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is pleased to offer health insurance coverage to its eligible students who would like to take advantage of this benefit.

The description of the health insurance plan for 09-10 is available from Health Services website. The normal cost of health insurance for Fall is $766 and for Spring it is $975.

In order for a student to be eligible, that student must receive a stipend that originates from an academic source as follows:

 1. Students receiving funding from GSAS.
 2. Students receiving stipends as graduate assistants from academic
    units other than GSAS.
 3. Students receiving outside academic funding, for example, Canadian
    government fellowships.

The calculation of the subsidy will be as follows:

  • In order to determine the stipend amount for the fall term, the summer stipend amount will be added to the total amount of the stipends awarded for fall - covering the period 06/01-12/31. For the spring term, only the stipends received for the period 01/01 through 05/31 will be considered.

  • Amount of the credit (% of cost of medical insurance that will be covered) is based on the amount of the stipend and will be calculated term by term. The amounts for FY2010 are as follows:
Term Stipend Amount
Amount of Credit
$1,000 – 3,499 25% of the medical insurance charge for the term
$3,500 – 5,49950% of the medical insurance charge for the term
$5,500 – 7,49975% of the medical insurance charge for the term
$7,500 and above100% of the medical insurance charge for the term

PLEASE NOTE: All students' accounts will be charged for insurance unless they waive BC student medical insurance. Eligible students will receive the applicable credit to their account based on the information above, sometime later this fall.  Please reassure eligible students that they will receive the credit sometime later this fall and that they should NOT worry about paying for the amount of the health insurance charges that will eventually be covered by the pro rata credit.
