Where is the Associate Dean's Office?

The Undergraduate Associate Dean's Office is located in Fulton Hall, Room 360.

How do I arrange a Leave of Absence or a Readmission?

You must pick up a Leave of Absence or Readmission form in Fulton 360 or in the Office of Student Services, fill it out and return it to the Associate Dean's Office in Fulton 360.

How do I transfer internally into the Carroll School?

You must go to the Associate Dean's office in Fulton 360 and sign up for a transfer information session. These sessions are held from October - November (1st term) and February - April (2nd term). Students have two opportunities to apply: current sophomores can apply at the end of first semester and current freshmen can apply at the end of their first year. 

Where do I sign up for Summer School?

The Summer School office is located in McGuinn 100.

If I would like to study abroad, what do I do?
You must first visit the Office for International Programs (OIP) in Hovey House and meet with an Advising Assistant.  After you have narrowed down your destinations through this meeting and doing some research, you need to meet with an International Advisor by making an appointment.

Can I get into the Honors Program after my freshman year?
Yes, if your grades are very good you may request consideration to be admitted into the Honors Program by contacting the Program Director, Professor Stephanie Greene at stephanie.greene.1@bc.edu.

How do I change / add a concentration?
In order to change / add a concentration, you must complete paperwork in Fulton 360.

How do I locate faculty?

If you are “at home,”or on-line, the easiest and quickest way to locate faculty is to consult the online Directory in Agora. If you're in Fulton, check the large directories at the north and south entrances.

How do I change my address on school records?

Personal information can be changed on U-View (http://agora.bc.edu) and at the Office of Student Services in Lyons.

Can I get academic credit for an internship?

Students may receive a one-credit practicum for unpaid work in the business world. You will need to complete the internship paperwork and submit it to the Associate Dean's Office in Fulton 360.

How do I prove foreign language proficiency?

All Carroll School of Management students may demonstrate proficiency as follows:

  • By achieving a score of 3 or better on the A.P. exam (French, German, or Spanish) or a score of 500 or better on the SAT II (French, German, Italian, or Spanish) reading exam. Starting with students entering in the fall of 2005, students must receive a score of 550 or better on the SAT reading exam in French, German, Italian, or Spanish.


  • By achieving a score of 4 or 5 on the A.P. exam or of 600 or better on the SAT II reading exam in Latin or Greek.
    For languages other than French, German, Italian, and Spanish: By passing one of the proficiency tests administered by the departments of Classical Studies and German Studies. Tests may be given in other languages by special arrangement in the Slavic Studies Department.


  • By successfully completing course work through the second semester at the intermediate level or one semester above the intermediate level.
    By passing four years of high school language study (which need not be the same language, e.g., two years of Latin and two years of French would fulfill the language requirement).


  • By taking one year of a new language or by completing two semesters of an intermediate level language if the Carroll School of Management student enters Boston College with three years of a foreign language.


Students wishing to demonstrate proficiency in a language other than those listed above and those for whom English is not their first language, should consult their class dean.

Language courses will count as Arts and Sciences electives. Students with documented learning disabilities may be exempt from the foreign language requirement and should consult with the Associate Dean. Fulfillment of the proficiency requirement by the examinations listed above does not confer course credit.

What is Beta Gamma Sigma?

Beta Gamma Sigma is a national business honor society and only Juniors in the top 5% or Seniors in the top 10% of their classes are invited to join.

Can I major in Arts and Sciences?

Yes, after declaring a major in CSOM, students can, in addition, pursue an A&S major after consultation with that particular Arts & Science Department Chair/Secretary and the approval of the Associate Dean.

What other schools cross-register with Boston College?

Cross registration is available at Boston University, Tufts, Brandeis, Regis, Pine Manor and Hebrew College.

Is academic tutoring available at BC?

Academic tutoring is available through the Academic Development Center in O'Neill Library. There are also a number of departmental tutoring programs available, for instance through Math and Accounting.  The Carroll School Honors Program provides tutoring for some of the Carroll School core classes.

How do I know if I am set to graduate?

The Office of Student Services in Lyons is the final authority in clearing students for graduation.

If I am sick, whom do I notify?

Call the Associate Dean's office at 617-552-3932.

Who maintains the Dean's List an how do I get on it?

The Dean's List is generated by the Office of Student Services. It is displayed in the alcove outside the Associate Dean's Office in Fulton 360. The qualifications for listing: students who have a GPA of 3.33 and above with no incompletes or withdrawals are considered to be on The Dean's List.

How do I withdraw from the University?

Students must fill out a withdrawal form which is available only through the Office of Student Services or the Associate Dean's Office.

Who is my advisor?

Sophomores can find his/her advisor's name and email address through U-View.  Freshmen are assigned advisors through Portico.
Seniors and juniors are not assigned one particular advisor.  Instead, they are assigned to the department in which they concentrate.  Through large group departmental advising (e.g. In-Gathering events), Dean's Office drop-in hours, and Dean's Coffee, seniors and juniors have a "community" of advisors to use.  Please visit the Advising section to learn more.

Can I change my advisor?

Yes, you may. You can pick up a change of advisor form in Fulton 360.

Can I pass / fail a course and how do I do it?

Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are allowed to take a course pass/fail provided the course is an elective in A&S, LSOE, CSON. Pass/fail is declared during drop/add and may require permission of the instructor. The pass/fail option should be used sparingly (1 course) if a student is contemplating application to graduate school.

How do I withdraw from a course?

Withdrawal forms are available in Fulton 360 or can be downloaded from the Student Services website.  The form must be filled out and left with the Associate Dean for processing. 

How do I arrange a course overload?

Students with a GPA of at least a 3.0 may register for a sixth course through UDIAL and UView during drop/add. Other students may petition the Associate Dean's office.

How do I sign up for an evening school course?

Students should (1) pick up a Course Approval form at the Office of Student Services; (2) obtain Department Chair signature and approval if the course is for Core/Major credit; and (3) receive the Associate Dean's signature. The form must then be returned to the Office of Student Services.

What is a course approval form?

A Course Approval Form grants permission to take a course for credit at other accredited universities. Students must obtain this approval before enrolling in any course away from Boston College.

What is drop/add and when does it take place?

Drop/add is the term applied to the first week of classes in each semester when students are allowed to adjust their academic schedules.

How do I override into a closed course?

Override permission into a closed course is obtained only through the Department Chairperson of said course.

What if I disagree with a grade?

A student should consult personally with his professor about a disputed grade. If further satisfaction is required, the student should speak with the Department Chair.

Do failures remain on my permanent transcript?

Failures (F) do remain on a student's transcript.

What's a deficiency?

A course deficiency is incurred any time you do not successfully complete the expected number of courses in a semester because of failure, course withdrawal or underloading.

What does it take to graduate with honors?

Honors are determined by percentage and class size. Summa Cum Laude is awarded to the top 4.5%, Magna Cum Laude to the next 9.5%, and Cum Laude to the next 15%.
